These paintings are based on the carousel in New York City’s Central Park. Each carousel horse has its ears back and is reared in anger. I thought this was unusual for a child’s amusement so I felt compelled to paint them. At this time, I was working at the San Francisco Opera painting the set for Un Ballo In Maschera and we were using alot of glazes over metallic paper and paint. I was inspired by the patina this produced to use this technique in these paintings.
